Transforming an old building in Clerkenwell into a modern student campus with fully integrated access control and CCTV

Transforming an old building in Clerkenwell into a vibrant space for Fordham University’s new London Campus, which sees up to 300 students on a daily basis. Our fit-out partner, Maris, required a partner who could design and install a fully integrated security solution for the 18,000 sq ft space.

Key issues

Fordham University’s new London Centre includes a contemporary student centre, rooftop terrace, learning resource centre and stage of the art classrooms. The client needed a security solution that could be monitored and controlled from their main site in New York. The building’s floor to ceiling lattice windows presented unique challenges for cabling solutions that needed to be overcome.

Ace approach

After being given the initial brief, we worked closely with the end client in New York to design the appropriate security solution.

We installed an S2 access control system throughout the building, including to a couple of doors that hadn’t been identified as a risk in the initial drawings. We added an enterprise controller so that additional portals can be added should the client develop the site further or add another site in London in the future.

We added a much more comprehensive CCTV system to the one that had already been quoted to ensure appropriate protection. Working closely with the client in New York, we opted for full integration with access control and CCTV using an S2 NetVR recorder. Their access control and CCTV is fully integrated, so if there’s a forced door in the building it can be picked up on CCTV in real-time and accessed in New York.

We also installed a Texecom Ricochet wireless intruder alarm system. A wireless system was chosen because the building had large lattice glass windows on the front and side elevations which were unsuitable for cables.
