Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems are an active fire protection measure that can detect a fire at an early stage. These systems operate by drawing air in through a network of pipes with holes strategically located to allow air into the pipe network. This is drawn to an aspirating device which samples the air for smoke particles.
Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems are available from a variety of manufacturers including Honeywell Gent (FAAST or Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology), Xtralis (VESDA or Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) among others. Most systems use either ionization smoke detection or photoelectric smoke detection. Both technologies are also available in a single device.
